Kiwibank economists caution against 'irresponsible' increases in interest rates
Economists Divided on Reserve Bank's Interest Rate Strategy
There is a clear division among economists regarding the Reserve Bank's approach to adjusting interest rates. Kiwibank's analysts have strongly cautioned against what they describe as "reckless" increases, suggesting that further hikes could potentially trigger another recession driven by the central bank.
This debate intensifies as several financial institutions revise their forecasts, anticipating earlier rate rises due to concerns that escalating tensions in the Middle East and higher fuel costs may push inflation higher. ANZ recently updated its outlook, now predicting three rate increases within the year, beginning in July.
In their commentary, Kiwibank's Jarrod Kerr and Alexandra Turcu emphasized the risks associated with aggressive monetary tightening, urging caution in the Reserve Bank's decision-making process.
